Advantages of using RSS feeds
From the average iPodder's point of view the main advantage is one of time. Imagine having to trawl your way through dozens of websites to locate material that you may want to listen to. By subscribing to a favorite RSS feed in a feed reader you can in seconds browse the headlines of many sites and with one click you can be downloading the podcast.
You can subscribe to blogs (text based) as well as podcasts (an audio file) and vodcasts (a video file). It isn't necessary to understand or even know anything about the technology behind them - just do it! Download my favorite feed reader - Feed Demon or subscribe to an online version such as Bloglines and get going.
Once your reader is set up go to a specialist search engine such as Feedster find a few feeds you fancy, and then practice organizing your feeds into their Folders or Channels.
Let's try an example for keeping up with the news - Go to google news and put in a keyword - for our example i'll use "music downloads" - when the search results page comes back look for the RSS link - copy the URL and paste it in your reader.Try yahoo news - put in your keyword and repeat the process. With a little practice
For keeping up with blogs - Technorati is a favorite of mine. For audio pods and video pods see the iPod Bloggers list of search engines and directories.
You can set up many "alert" type feeds, whether it is a shopping alert or when a favorite podcast episode is updated. You'll find a huge selection at iTunes.
On this site you can set up alerts for buying an iPod on eBay. Simply select the model or models that you would like information about and by putting the feed in your reader it will be updated at your command. Finished with the feed - simply delete it. We currently provide feeds for "New Listings" and auctions with "2hours to go". I have written a short tutorial to show you how easy it is. If you would like information of any new alerts that we set up please subscribe to our newsletter or our RSS feed
The beauty of RSS feeds as opposed to eMails are the control you have over what comes down onto your computer. RSS is a "pull" method as opposed to eMails which are "pushed" at you. With RSS feeds you are not risking your eMail address getting into the hands of spammers.
